How to Appear in Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews pull from pages that already rank well and are structured clearly enough to summarize accurately — there is no separate "AI Overviews SEO" outside of doing SEO well. There is no way to submit a page for inclusion or guarantee a placement.
How AI Overviews select sources
AI Overviews are generated from Google's own index using a mix of retrieval and summarization, drawing primarily on pages that already rank for the query and can be summarized without ambiguity. Pages with a clear, direct answer near the top, unambiguous topic focus, and supporting structured data are easier for this process to use correctly.
What actually helps
- Ranking well organically first — AI Overviews draw from the existing index, not a separate one
- Leading with a direct, unambiguous answer before supporting detail
- Accurate, validated structured data (FAQPage, Article, Service) that matches the visible content exactly
- Avoiding contradictory or duplicate information across your own pages
- Keeping factual details (pricing, service area, contact method) current and consistent
What doesn't help
There is no meta tag, submission form, or paid placement for AI Overviews. Keyword stuffing, AI-generated filler content, or schema that doesn't match the visible page can actively hurt eligibility, since these make a page harder to summarize accurately rather than easier.
