Your Google Business Profile is the highest-return marketing asset you own, and it costs nothing but time. Most Indian businesses claimed theirs years ago and never touched it again. This is the audit we run in a client's first week, ordered by what actually moves rankings.
If you fix only three things this week, make them these: your primary category, your review flow, and your photos. Category selection decides which searches you are eligible for at all. Reviews and fresh photos decide whether you beat the business next door. Everything else on this page matters, but those three carry most of the weight.
Two features you may remember are gone, and we will cover what replaced them.
What the map pack is, and why three slots decide your revenue
Search for "dentist near me" in Delhi and you get a map with three business listings under it. That block is the map pack. Below it sit the ordinary blue links.
Three slots. Not ten. On a phone, those three listings plus the map fill most of the first screen, and on local queries that increasingly sit under an AI summary, the pack is often the first thing a buyer can actually tap.
This is why profile work outranks almost everything else for a local business. A dental clinic in Rajouri Garden competing for "dentist in Rajouri Garden" is up against maybe fifteen serious profiles inside a two-kilometre radius. That is a winnable fight. The same clinic trying to rank a web page for "best dentist in Delhi" is competing with aggregators that have spent years and crores on the problem.
Google says local ranking comes down to three things: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher), and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You cannot change distance. You have a lot of control over the other two.
The eight profile fields that influence ranking
Most profiles are half-filled. Here is what to complete, with a worked example for a fictional clinic, Sharma Dental Care in Rajouri Garden.
| Field | What most businesses do | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | Pick something vague | Pick the single most specific category that describes your main revenue. Here, Dentist. |
| Secondary categories | Leave empty | Add every genuine service line, up to nine. Dental implants periodontist, Cosmetic dentist, Emergency dental service. |
| Service areas | Set a 25 km radius | List the localities you actually serve: Rajouri Garden, Tagore Garden, Subhash Nagar, Punjabi Bagh. |
| Business description | Marketing adjectives | 750 characters on what you do, for whom, and where. |
| Products and services | Ignored entirely | List each service separately with a short description: root canal, implant, braces, scaling. |
| Attributes | Skipped | Tick every true one. Wheelchair accessible entrance, accepts UPI, appointments available. |
| Hours and special hours | Set once, never updated | Set regular hours, then special hours for every festival you close for. |
| Booking link | Missing | Add a direct booking URL or your WhatsApp click-to-chat link. |
Two of these deserve extra attention.
Service areas
Setting a giant radius does not make you rank across it. If you have a physical address customers visit, you often should not set service areas at all. Use them when you travel to the customer, like a pest control or AC repair business.
Special hours for Indian festivals
This is the most neglected field on Indian profiles and the easiest to fix. If your profile says "Open" on Diwali and a customer drives to a closed shutter, you have earned a one-star review that will sit there for years.
Set special hours for Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, Independence Day, Republic Day and any regional holiday you close for. Do it once a year in a single sitting.
Your primary category is the single highest-impact choice
Your primary category determines which searches you can appear for at all. Get it wrong and no amount of reviews will save you.
The rule: pick the most specific category that describes how you make most of your money. Not the most impressive one, and not the broadest one.
| Business | Common wrong choice | Better primary category | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental clinic doing implants | Doctor | Dentist | Too broad, puts you in a pool you cannot win |
| CA firm in Nehru Place | Financial consultant | Certified public accountant | People search "CA near me" |
| Saree wholesaler, Chandni Chowk | Clothing store | Sari store | Specific category, far less competition |
| PG operator, Laxmi Nagar | Hostel | Student housing centre | Hostel pulls tourist searches you cannot serve |
| Coaching institute | School | Coaching centre | School triggers different queries entirely |
Category names in Google's picker change and vary by country, so do not copy that table blindly. Open the category selector, type your service, and read what Google actually offers you. If two categories look equally right, choose the one whose name matches the words your customers use out loud.
Once your primary is set, add secondary categories for every real service line. You can add up to nine. Adding categories you do not genuinely serve is a suspension risk, not a shortcut.
Photos: how many, what kind, and the geotagging myth
Profiles with recent photos look active. Profiles with no photos since 2021 look closed.
What to upload:
- Exterior, shot from the direction customers approach. This is the photo that stops someone walking past your gate.
- Interior, three to five, showing the actual space rather than a stock reception.
- Team, at least one, with faces. Trust in Indian service businesses is personal.
- Work or product, the most of any type. Before and after shots, the product range, the machinery.
- Logo and cover, set deliberately rather than left to Google's automatic pick.
Aim for around twenty good photos at setup, then a handful every month. Google has never published a freshness threshold, so treat any agency that promises one with suspicion. The practical reason to keep adding photos is simpler: a profile whose newest photo is four years old tells a customer very little about whether you are still operating the way you used to.
The geotagging myth
You will find agencies in India selling "geotagged photo uploads" as a ranking service. Google strips EXIF data from images uploaded to Business Profiles, so the embedded coordinates do not survive the upload. It is not a ranking factor. If someone is charging you monthly for it, that line item can go.
Shoot on a recent phone in daylight. Professional photography is nice and not necessary.
Reviews: velocity beats count
A profile with 40 reviews collected steadily over the past year usually outperforms one with 200 reviews that all arrived in 2022. Recency and consistency are what signal an operating business.
How to ask without breaking the rules
Google's review policy prohibits offering anything of value in exchange for reviews. No discounts, no free service, no lucky draw. What is allowed is simply asking.
The method that works: ask in person at the moment the customer is happiest, then follow up on WhatsApp within the hour with your review short link. Not a week later. The gap between satisfaction and the ask is what determines whether you get the review.
Get your short link from your profile's "Ask for reviews" option and save it as a WhatsApp quick reply. Aim for a steady trickle rather than a burst. Twenty reviews appearing in one afternoon looks exactly like what it is, and Google's filters treat it accordingly.
Responding to a one-star
Reply within 24 hours. Keep it under four sentences. Do not argue, do not restate your side at length, and never mention private details about the customer's treatment or account. Acknowledge, offer a direct channel, and stop. Something like:
"Thank you for telling us. We are sorry your visit did not go well. Please call our clinic on [number] and ask for Dr Sharma directly so we can sort this out."
That reply is not written for the reviewer. It is written for the next fifty people who read it.
Buying reviews
Paid reviews, review exchange groups and staff writing reviews from personal accounts are the fastest route to a suspended profile. Google removes them in waves, and the profile carries the penalty, not the vendor who sold them.
What replaced Posts, Chat and Q&A
This is where advice written before 2025 will lead you wrong.
Google Posts still work
Publish something weekly: an offer, a new service, a festival greeting, a photo from a recent job. Posts appear on your profile and give returning visitors a reason to believe you are open and active. Keep them short and put the important words first.
Chat is gone
Google discontinued the built-in chat feature, call history and quote requests on 31 July 2024. If you are still waiting for messages through your profile, nobody can send them.
What replaced it is better for India
You can now add a WhatsApp or text message option under Edit profile, then Contact, then Chat. For an Indian business this is a straight upgrade, because WhatsApp is where your customers already are and where your staff already work. Add your click-to-chat URL and the button appears on your profile.
Two details worth knowing. Availability is region-limited, so the option may not appear for every profile yet. And if you add both WhatsApp and text, only the text message option is shown to customers, so pick one deliberately.
Q&A is being dismantled
Google discontinued the Q&A API on 3 November 2025, saying it is updating the Q&A functionality and user experience. Many profiles have since lost the section entirely. The old tactic of seeding your own questions and answering them is not worth your time right now. Put those answers in your business description, your services list and your website FAQ instead, where you control them and where AI assistants can read them.
NAP consistency: the boring fix that quietly works
NAP means name, address, phone number. Google cross-references yours across the web. When the details disagree, confidence in your listing drops.
Check these, in this order:
- Your website footer and contact page
- Google Business Profile
- Justdial
- Sulekha
- IndiaMART, if you are B2B
- Practo or the equivalent vertical directory for your trade
- Facebook page
- Any listing an old agency built for you
Pick one exact format for your address and use it character for character everywhere. "Shop 12, Block A, Rajouri Garden, New Delhi 110027" is one format. "12A, Rajouri Garden, Delhi - 110027" is a different one. Choose one and stop improvising.
The most common problem we find in Delhi is the phone number. A business runs a landline on the website, a mobile on Justdial and a different mobile on the profile because the manager who set it up has since left. Consolidate to one number that is answered.
On business names
Use your real registered trading name. "Sharma Dental Care - Best Dentist in West Delhi" violates Google's naming policy and is a common suspension trigger. Keyword stuffing the name occasionally works for a while and then costs you the listing.
Suspension and reinstatement
Profiles get suspended, often without warning. The usual triggers in India:
- Keywords added to the business name
- A virtual office or coworking address used as a physical location
- A residential address for a business that takes no visitors
- Multiple profiles at the same address
- Changing the address, name and category all at once
- Review manipulation
If it happens, do not create a second profile. That compounds the problem. Use the reinstatement request form and prepare documentation before you file: your GST certificate, Shop and Establishment licence, a utility bill in the business name, and photographs showing your signage, your entrance and the building number.
Reinstatements commonly take one to three weeks and can require more than one appeal. There is no phone number that speeds this up, whatever anyone tells you.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Claim and verify the profile | 20 min + wait | High |

| 3 | Add up to nine secondary categories | 15 min | High |
| 4 | Remove keywords from the business name | 5 min | High |

| 11 | Set special hours for all festivals | 20 min | Medium |
| 12 | Add the WhatsApp or text chat option | 10 min | High |
| 13 | Add a booking or appointment link | 15 min | Medium |
| 14 | Tick every true attribute | 15 min | Medium |

| 19 | Match the website footer to the profile | 10 min | Medium |
| 20 | Diarise a monthly 30-minute review | 5 min | High |
Roughly seven to eight hours of work in total. It is genuinely a weekend.
What does not work in 2026
Things you can stop paying for.
- Geotagged photo uploads. Google strips EXIF data on upload. The coordinates never reach Google.
- Bulk citation packages. "500 directory submissions for ₹4,000" builds listings on sites no Indian customer uses, often with mismatched details that actively harm your NAP consistency. Ten accurate listings on directories people actually use beat five hundred junk ones.
- Posting daily for the sake of it. Posting frequency is not a ranking factor. A weekly post with something real to say does more than a daily "Good morning" graphic.
- Buying reviews or joining review exchange groups. Removed in waves, and the penalty lands on your profile.
- Seeding your own Q&A. This was reasonable advice until 2025. With the API discontinued and the section disappearing from profiles, the effort belongs elsewhere now.
Worked example: a clinic in Rajouri Garden
Where the profile started: claimed in 2021, name reading "Sharma Dental Care - Best Dentist Rajouri Garden", primary category Doctor, four photos from 2021, 22 reviews with none in the past eight months and no replies, hours showing open on Diwali, no services listed, website footer showing an old landline.
What changed in week one:
- Name corrected to Sharma Dental Care, removing the keyword stuffing and the suspension risk
- Primary category moved from Doctor to Dentist, with six secondary categories added
- All 11 services listed individually with descriptions and price ranges
- 24 photos uploaded, including the exterior shot from the main road approach
- Special hours set for nine festival dates for the next twelve months
- WhatsApp chat option added, pointing at the number the receptionist actually watches
- All 22 existing reviews replied to, including the two one-stars
- Review short link saved as a WhatsApp quick reply for the front desk
- Website footer, Justdial and Practo corrected to one address format and one mobile number
What was not promised: a specific ranking, or a result by a specific date. What was expected, and what the client was told to watch, was an increase in direction requests and calls from the profile over the following two to three months, tracked in the profile's own performance report.
That is the honest shape of this work. It is not dramatic. It is a weekend of unglamorous fixes that quietly stops you losing customers you were never told about.
How we handle this
Profile work is week one of every local engagement we run at Chirag Digital. We audit the profile against this exact checklist, fix what we can access directly, and hand you a short list of what needs your documents or your decision. It sits alongside the on-page and technical work that decides whether your website supports the profile or undermines it.
Send us your profile link and we will send back a marked-up version of this checklist within three working days, at no cost. You can also read more about how we work with businesses across Delhi.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for Google Business Profile changes to show?
Most edits appear within a few minutes to 24 hours. Changes to your business name, address or category are reviewed more carefully and can take several days. If an edit is rejected, you will usually see the field revert rather than receive a notification.
Does posting on Google Business Profile improve rankings?
Posting frequency is not a confirmed ranking factor. Posts help by giving returning visitors current information and by making an active profile look active. A weekly post with real content is sufficient. Daily posting for its own sake offers no measurable advantage.
How many reviews do I need to rank in the map pack?
There is no threshold. What matters more is steady recent reviews and replies to all of them, compared against the other profiles competing in your locality. A business with 40 reviews collected across the past year commonly outperforms one with 200 reviews that stopped arriving in 2022.
Can I use my home address for my Google Business Profile?
Yes, if customers genuinely visit you there. If they do not, set your business as a service-area business and hide the address instead. Listing a residential address that customers never visit, or a virtual office, is a common cause of suspension in Indian cities.
Why did the chat button disappear from my Google Business Profile?
Google discontinued built-in chat, call history and quote requests on 31 July 2024. It has been replaced by an option to add WhatsApp or text messaging under Edit profile, then Contact, then Chat. Availability varies by region, and if you add both, only text messaging is shown.
