You can verify your business on Meta without a GST number. For Indian businesses, Meta's verification form accepts an MSME Udyam registration number alongside GSTIN, PAN and CIN. I verified Chirag Digital's business portfolio with a Udyam number on 16 September 2026. The approval came through within minutes, and I never had to upload a document. Here is exactly what I did, what has to be filled in before the option even appears, and the mistakes that get most applications stuck.
If you run a small business, you probably have Udyam and not GST, because Udyam is free and GST only becomes compulsory above a turnover limit. Most guides online assume you have GST. This one doesn't.
Why bother verifying at all
For a long time I ignored the "verify your business" prompts. Then Ads Manager showed a banner saying verification "may be required soon" to avoid possible disruptions to ads. If you plan to run even a small Facebook or Instagram campaign, you don't want to discover that on the day you need the ads live.
Verification also changes what appears on your ads. Once Meta has verified the business, the confirmation email says you can "disclose this person or organization as the beneficiary or payer for your ads." In practice, your ads can say they were paid for by your business name, not by you personally. A few other Meta tools also ask for a verified business before they unlock higher limits.
It is free. Business verification and Meta Verified (the paid blue-tick subscription) are two different things. You do not need to pay anything for the first one.
What you need before you start
Keep these ready before you open the verification screen:
- Your Udyam registration number. It looks like UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 and is printed on your Udyam certificate.
- Your Udyam certificate itself, only for reading off the exact name and address. You should not need to upload it, but you need to copy from it.
- Admin access to your business portfolio in Meta Business Suite (the portfolio used to be called Business Manager).
- A business phone number and website, if you have them.
If you don't have Udyam yet, register on the official government portal. It is free and Aadhaar-based. Be careful with look-alike websites that charge a "registration fee", because the real one does not.
Step 1: Fill in Business info first
This is the step nobody mentions, and it is the reason many people can't find the verification option at all.
In Meta Business Suite, go to Settings → Business info. When I first opened it, the legal business name, address, business phone and website were all blank. With those fields empty, the verification flow has nothing to check your registration against.
Fill them in exactly as they appear on your Udyam certificate:
- Legal business name: copy it character for character. If the certificate says "Sharma Traders", don't type "Sharma Trading Co." or add "Delhi" at the end.
- Address: use the registered address from the certificate, not the shop you moved to last year.
- Phone and website: your business number and your own domain, if you have one.
Save, and give it a minute.
Step 2: Choose "organization", not "yourself"
Go to Settings → Authorizations and verifications. Meta moves its menus around every few months, so if the name has changed, search for "verification" inside Settings. You will see an option to verify yourself or an organization.
Pick organization (under the business portfolio tab). This choice matters more than it looks.
- Verify yourself asks for a government ID, and sometimes a selfie, and ties the ads to you as a person. Your own name can then show up in ad disclosures and in Meta's public Ad Library.
- Verify an organization checks your business registration. The name that appears is your business name.
I did not want my personal name on every ad, so the organization route was the obvious one.
Step 3: Enter the Udyam number and submit
The organization form lists the registration types it accepts for India. MSME UDYAM was on the list along with GSTIN, PAN and CIN. I entered the Udyam number, and every other field pre-filled from the Business info saved in Step 1. I checked each field once more against the certificate and pressed Submit.
The status changed to "Verification in progress", with a note that it would be reviewed within 48 hours.
What happened next
It did not take 48 hours. Within minutes an email arrived from Facebook saying verification for Chirag Digital was successful. Meta had matched the Udyam number against the official record by itself, so it never asked for a document upload.
The verification covered every ad account under that business portfolio, and the payer shown on ads is the business name.
Your result may differ. If Meta cannot match your details automatically, it asks for a document instead. In that case, upload the official Udyam certificate PDF and make sure the name and address on it match what you typed in Step 1.
Mistakes that get applications stuck
- Name not matching the certificate. This is the most common reason for a rejection. Extra words, a different spelling, "Pvt Ltd" added or dropped: any of these can fail the match.
- Leaving Business info empty and then wondering why the verification option doesn't appear.
- Choosing "verify yourself" by mistake, then finding your personal name on your ads.
- Using an old address. If you moved after registering on Udyam, either update Udyam first or use the address the certificate shows.
- Paying for the blue tick thinking it is verification. Meta Verified is an optional monthly subscription and a separate product.
Frequently asked questions
Can I verify a business on Meta without GST?
Yes. In India the organization verification form accepts an MSME Udyam registration number, and that is what I used.
Is Meta business verification free?
Yes. Only Meta Verified, the blue-tick subscription, is paid.
How long does it take?
Meta says up to 48 hours. Mine was approved within minutes because the Udyam number matched automatically. If Meta asks for a document upload, expect it to take longer.
Will my personal name appear on my ads?
Not if you verify as an organization. The disclosure uses your business name.
Do I need a website?
It helps, and the form has a field for it. My application was verified with a website on my own domain. If you don't have one, fill every other field carefully so your details still match the Udyam record.
Where to start
Open your Udyam certificate next to Meta Business Suite and do Step 1 today. Filling in Business info takes five minutes, and it removes the most common blocker.
Once you're verified, the next job is making your Facebook and Instagram pages bring in customers, not just likes. Here is what actually works on social media for small businesses. If you'd rather have it set up for you, see social media marketing in Delhi or message me on WhatsApp.
