# Backlinks for Small Businesses in India: 9 Ways to Earn Links Without Buying Them

Nine link-building methods that work for small Indian businesses, the three-part test for whether a backlink is worth having, why bought links backfire, and a realistic 90-day timeline.

A backlink is a link from someone else's website to yours, and it remains one of the strongest ranking signals Google uses. For a small Indian business the realistic path to earning them is a handful of repeatable methods — directories, suppliers, local press, genuine outreach — not a ₹2,000 package of "500 high-DA backlinks" from a marketplace, which does more damage than the ranking it promises.

This is the link-building process we run once a client's on-page work is done, covered in our complete SEO guide. No PBNs, no link exchanges, nothing that risks a manual action.

The three-part test for whether a backlink is worth having

Forget Domain Authority as the first filter. It is a third-party metric Google does not use, and a site can have a high score while being worthless for links. Ask these three questions instead.

  • Would a real person click it? If the linking page has actual visitors who might reach your site through it, the link has value beyond SEO. If the page exists only to hold outbound links, it does not.
  • Is the site itself real? Check the homepage. Does it look maintained, with recent content and a genuine audience — or is it a shell built to sell links, with articles on ten unrelated topics from casinos to cardiology?
  • Is it relevant to your business or your city? A link from a Delhi business directory or an industry blog outweighs a dozen irrelevant links from unrelated niches, even if those unrelated sites score higher on paper.

A link that fails all three is not neutral — it can flag your site as part of a manipulative pattern if enough of your profile looks like it.

Nine ways to earn backlinks for an Indian small business

None of these need a link-building budget. They need time, and a handful of emails.

1. Local and category directories

JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, TradeIndia and Yellow Pages India, plus the category-specific ones for your trade — Practo for clinics, Zomato for restaurants, NoBroker or 99acres for real estate. Most of these links are nofollow, but they build the citation consistency that also drives local map pack rankings, which is worth more to a local business than the link itself.

2. Supplier, manufacturer and distributor pages

If you sell or install a branded product, ask the manufacturer or distributor to list you on their "authorised dealer" or "where to buy" page. Most B2B suppliers maintain one and update it on request — it is a five-minute email that most businesses never send.

3. Trade associations and RWAs

Local trade associations, market welfare bodies and resident welfare associations across Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Nehru Place and similar markets often run a member directory on their website. Chamber of commerce membership works the same way at a wider level.

4. Local press and hyperlocal blogs

Delhi has hyperlocal news sites and neighbourhood blogs that need stories, not advertisers. A genuinely newsworthy angle — a festival-season data point, a milestone, a community initiative — has a real chance. A press release about your own launch does not.

5. Guest posts on relevant industry blogs

Not link-farm guest post networks that publish anything for a fee — real blogs in your niche with an actual readership. Pitch something genuinely useful with one contextual link, not a promotional piece with your keyword stuffed into the anchor text.

6. Testimonials for the tools and vendors you already use

Most SaaS tools, suppliers and local vendors publish a testimonials or case-studies page, and many link back to the business giving the quote. If you already pay for a tool or work with a vendor, a genuine two-line testimonial with your logo often earns a link for free.

7. Sponsoring local events

College fests, marathons, community events and local nonprofit drives almost always list sponsors on a web page with a link. The sponsorship cost is usually modest and buys goodwill in your neighbourhood alongside the link.

8. Resource pages and "best of" roundups

Search for "best [your category] in Delhi" or "[your category] resources" and find pages that already list businesses like yours. A short, specific email asking to be considered for the next update works more often than most people expect.

9. Journalist and reporter requests

Platforms like Qwoted and SourceBottle, and the #journorequest tag on X, connect reporters looking for expert quotes with people who can give them. Answer two or three relevant requests a month with a genuinely useful quote and the links compound over time, usually from real news sites.

What does not work, and can get you penalised

Google's link spam systems specifically target the shortcuts, and a manual action can drop a site out of the results entirely while it is in effect.

  • Bulk link packages from marketplaces or freelance platforms promising "500 backlinks" or "guaranteed DA 50+" — these are link farms, and Google's algorithms are built specifically to find them.
  • Private blog networks (PBNs) — a set of sites built purely to link to each other. They are identifiable by hosting patterns and content quality, and a PBN getting caught can drag every site it links to down with it.
  • Large-scale link exchanges — "you link to me, I'll link to you" arranged at volume, rather than one or two genuine partnerships.
  • Comment and forum spam — links dropped in blog comments or forum signatures purely for SEO. Nearly all of these are nofollow anyway, so the effort is wasted twice over.
  • Automated directory submission software — blasting a business into hundreds of low-quality, unmoderated directories in one sitting. A handful of relevant, real directories beats hundreds of junk ones.

Recovering from a spammy link profile means filing a disavow request in Search Console and waiting out a reconsideration process that runs months, not weeks. It is cheaper to avoid it than to fix it.

A worked example: a modular kitchen brand in Rohini

Ninety days, no paid link packages, roughly four hours a week.

PeriodLinks earnedSource
Month 164 local directories, 2 hardware supplier "dealer" pages
Month 241 hyperlocal press mention for a Diwali offer story, 3 vendor testimonials
Month 331 guest post on a home-interiors blog, 1 resource-page inclusion, 1 trade association listing

Thirteen links in ninety days, almost all from sites with genuine, relevant traffic. "Modular kitchen Rohini" moved from page 3 to the bottom of page 1 over the same period, alongside the on-page fixes done in month one. The links did not do that alone — they rarely do — but a page with strong on-page SEO and no backlinks tends to stall exactly where this one started.

Frequently asked questions

How many backlinks does a small business website need?

There is no fixed number. What matters is that your link count and quality keep pace with whoever currently ranks above you. Twenty relevant, real links usually outrank two hundred directory-blast links, so check competitors before setting a target.

Do nofollow links help SEO at all?

Yes, indirectly. Google has treated nofollow as a hint rather than a strict instruction since 2020, and a nofollow link from a real, relevant site still sends referral traffic and builds citation consistency. Most directory and social profile links are nofollow and are still worth having.

Is Wikipedia a good source of backlinks?

Not as a tactic. Wikipedia links are nofollow, self-promotional edits get reverted quickly, and an editor account can be banned for it. Treat Wikipedia as a citation to add only once your business is independently notable enough for a neutral, sourced mention — not as a link-building target.

How can I check who is already linking to my competitors?

Search Console only shows links to your own site. To see a competitor's backlinks you need a third-party tool such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Ubersuggest's free tier — paste in their domain and sort by referring domains. Directories and associations linking to three or four competitors will usually list you too.

How long before new backlinks affect rankings?

Google has to recrawl the linking page first, which takes days to a few weeks. The ranking effect is gradual rather than instant, and usually becomes visible over four to twelve weeks as several links accumulate, not from any single one.

Where to start

Pick the three methods from the list above that fit your business best — for most local businesses that is directories, supplier pages and testimonials, because they need the least outreach. Send five emails this week rather than planning a campaign you never start.

If backlinks are one more thing on a list that never gets done, that is what our content marketing service covers, and a free audit will show you exactly which link gaps are holding your pages back.
