If your Google listing has the wrong category, Google shows your business to the wrong people. A small embroidery unit in Ghaziabad was listed as a "Joiner", which is woodwork. We changed its primary category to "Embroidery service", and the public listing showed the change in about three hours. Below is what we found, what we changed, what we deliberately left alone, and how you can check your own category in two minutes.

What we found

The business does computerized embroidery work. When we searched its name on Google, the short line under the name said "Joiner". A joiner is a carpenter who makes doors, frames and furniture. Google had taken that word at face value: the "People also search for" box next to the listing showed carpenters and woodworkers, not embroidery shops.

That single word explained the problem. Google decides which searches a business can appear in by looking at its category first. Someone typing "embroidery near me" had little reason to see this listing, because as far as Google knew, it was a woodwork business.

The same listing had other gaps too:

  • The hours said "Open 24 hours", which was not true
  • There was no phone number, so no Call button
  • There was no working website linked
  • The description was short and did not say what the unit actually makes

We started with the category, because every other fix depends on it.

Why the category matters more than anything else

Think of the category as the signboard Google reads. Photos, reviews and a good description all help, but they help you inside the searches Google already thinks you belong to. If the category is wrong, all that effort points the wrong way.

Wrong categories are easy to miss because they are rarely absurd. A sweet shop listed as "Restaurant", a tailor listed as "Clothing store", a coaching centre listed as "School". None of these look broken at a glance. Each one is wrong enough to miss the customers who search for exactly what the business does.

What we changed

The owner added us as a manager through Google's own sharing option. We did not ask for a password or a verification code, and the owner remains the owner of the listing. If anyone asks you for those, read our post on Google listing scam calls first.

Then we did four things:

  1. Opened the profile's business information and went to Business category
  2. Replaced "Joiner" with "Embroidery service" as the primary category
  3. Left the business name exactly as it was. Adding words like "Embroidery Works Ghaziabad" to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get a listing suspended.
  4. Did not pile on extra categories. Additional categories are worth adding only when they describe work the business really does.

That was the whole fix, and it took a few minutes.

How fast Google showed it

About three hours later, the public listing on Google Search read "Embroidery service in Ghaziabad" under the business name.

Not every edit is that quick. Google reviews some changes before publishing them, and edits like phone numbers and descriptions can show "Pending review" for up to 48 hours. If an edit is pending, leave it alone. Editing the same thing again restarts the review.

Occasionally Google asks the owner to verify the business again after a category change. It did not happen here, but keep the owner's phone handy in case it does.

Check your own category in 2 minutes

  1. Search your business name on Google
  2. Look at the short line under the name, for example "Embroidery service in Ghaziabad". That first part is your primary category.
  3. Ask yourself: would a customer searching for my main work use this word?
  4. If not, sign in to the Google account that manages the listing, choose Edit profile, then Business category, and pick the most specific category that matches your main work
  5. Check back after a few hours. If you see "Pending review", wait.

One tip: type a few different words into the category box before you choose. Google's list has thousands of categories, and the right one is often more specific than the first suggestion.

What a category fix does not do

It does not put you at number one. For a search like "embroidery works", Google also looks at how close the searcher is and how many reviews nearby businesses have. A listing with five reviews will not jump above shops with nearly forty overnight, and anyone who promises that is guessing.

What the fix does is put the business in the right race. From here, the next steps for this listing are the gaps listed above: correct hours, a phone number for the Call button, a description that says what the unit makes, and more reviews from real customers over time.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing my category delete my reviews?

No. Reviews, ratings and photos stay on the listing when the category changes.

Can I choose more than one category?

Yes. You get one primary category and can add more. The primary one matters most, so choose it carefully, and add others only for work you really do.

How long does a category change take to show?

In this case about three hours. Some edits go to review first and can take up to 48 hours.

Can I put my main service in my business name instead?

No. The name on Google should match the name on your board. Adding keywords to it breaks Google's guidelines and risks a suspension.
