A boutique, tailor or embroidery unit in Delhi NCR gets orders from Google when five things are right: the primary category matches the main work, the phone number is one you actually answer, the photos show real work, the reviews come from real customers, and the timings are correct, especially in the festival and wedding season. Most of these businesses lose customers because of just one of these, usually the category or a missing phone number.
This guide covers each one in plain language, with a real example from a Ghaziabad embroidery unit we worked with.
How your customers actually search
A bride's family does not search for your shop's name. They search for what they need, close to where they are:
- "boutique near me"
- "ladies tailor in Karol Bagh"
- "blouse stitching near me"
- "embroidery work in Ghaziabad"
- "school logo embroidery"
Google answers these searches with the businesses whose category, location and details match. If your listing says the wrong thing, you do not show up, even if your work is the best in the market.
These searches jump from Navratri through Diwali and into the wedding season. If your listing has a problem, now is the time to fix it, not in December.
Step 1: Pick the right primary category
The primary category is the most important box on the listing. It tells Google what you are. Pick the one that matches the work that brings you most of your money:
- You design and sell outfits: Boutique. Add Women's clothing store as an additional category.
- You mainly stitch and alter: Tailor. Add Clothing alteration service if you do a lot of alterations.
- You do embroidery for shops, schools or companies: Embroidery service. Add Embroidery shop only if customers also walk in to buy.
- You sell fabric and also stitch: Fabric store as primary if fabric sales are bigger, with Tailor as an additional category.
Additional categories should only be work you really do. Adding ten categories does not push you up. It only confuses Google about what you are. We explain primary and additional categories in detail in this guide.
A real case: the embroidery unit Google thought was a carpenter
A computerised embroidery unit in Ghaziabad, running for decades, had a Google listing with the category "Joiner", which is woodwork. Nobody searching for embroidery could find it.
Here is what we changed, one step at a time:
- Category: changed to Embroidery service. Google started showing the listing for embroidery searches in about three hours. The full story is here.
- Phone number: the listing had no number at all. Adding one went into Google's review, which can take time, so in the meantime we put the number inside the business description, where customers could still see it.
- Description: we rewrote it to say exactly what the unit does: embroidery job work, corporate logo embroidery and school monogram orders, with timings and a note to call before visiting.
Within hours of the new description going live, Google's AI answer for the business's name began listing its services and its contact number. The listing now explains the business even to someone who has never heard of it.
Step 2: A phone number you answer, and WhatsApp
Most boutique and tailoring enquiries start with a photo: "Can you make this?" That happens on WhatsApp, not on a call.
- Put a number on the listing that you or your staff actually pick up.
- Add WhatsApp as a chat option, so customers can send design photos directly.
- If you change your number later, Google reviews the change, and that can take up to 48 hours. Do not keep editing it while it is under review. Our phone number guide explains why.
Step 3: Photos that bring orders
For this kind of business, photos do more selling than anything you write. Add real photos, never images copied from the internet or a supplier's catalogue:
- Finished outfits, on a hanger or a mannequin
- Close-ups of embroidery and handwork, where the detail shows
- Your machines at work. A 10-second video works very well.
- Your shop front and board, if customers visit you
- Your fabric or material collection
Only post a photo of a customer wearing your work if they have agreed to it. Add two or three new photos every month, and a fresh set before the wedding season.
Step 4: Use the name that is on your board
Write your business name exactly as it appears on your board and visiting card. Names like "Best Designer Boutique Delhi" or "No.1 Tailor Karol Bagh" are against Google's rules and can get the listing suspended.
If you want a word like Embroidery or Boutique in your name, put it on your board and cards first, then change the listing. If you change the name without proof, Google may ask you to verify the business again, and you will need that board to show in the video.
Step 5: Working from home? Hide the address
Many tailors and boutique owners work from home and visit customers or take orders on WhatsApp. That is fine. Hide your address on the listing and set a service area instead, such as your part of Delhi or the nearby cities you deliver to. Google keeps your address private and uses it only to verify you.
For verification, Google usually asks for a short video. Show the street outside, unlock your work area with your own key, and show your machines and current work, all in one continuous recording.
Step 6: Reviews from real customers only
Reviews decide which boutique a customer calls first. The right way to get them:
- Ask when the customer is happiest: at the trial or at delivery.
- Send your review link on WhatsApp the same day, so they can post it from their own phone.
- Reply to every review, including the unhappy ones. New customers read your replies.
Do not ask family or friends to post reviews. Google's filters catch them. On our own listing, the reviews from people close to us disappeared within weeks. Only the real client's review stayed. One genuine review is worth more than ten that vanish.
Before the wedding season: a quick checklist
- Is the primary category right?
- Does the number on the listing ring, and is WhatsApp added?
- Are there at least 10 real photos, including recent work?
- Are your Diwali and festival timings added under Special hours?
- Have you replied to every review?
Frequently asked questions
Can a home-based tailor get a Google listing?
Yes. Hide the address and set a service area. You still need to verify with Google.
Should I choose Boutique or Tailor?
Choose the one that brings most of your income. You can add the other as an additional category.
How long does a category change take to show?
Sometimes a few hours, sometimes a few days. In the embroidery case above, it took about three hours.
Do I need a website?
No, a Google listing works without one. But linking your Instagram or a simple website gives customers more of your work to see.
